A stochastic model of torque in von Karman swirling flow
A stochastic model is derived to predict the turbulent torque produced by a swirling flow. It is a simple Langevin process, with a colored noise. Using the unified colored noise approximation, we derive analytically the PDF of the fluctuations of injected power in two forcing regimes: constant angular velocity or constant applied torque. In the limit of small velocity fluctuations and vanishing...

متن کاملLayered Von Kármán’s swirling flow
Existence of an exact solution of the Navier-Stokes equations representing swirling flow consisting of two fluid layers is proven. It is assumed that the fluid in the bottom layer is injected into the swirl from a rotating disk. This describes the case when a disk melts in an ambient fluid and the melted fluid is removed by rotation of the disk.
متن کاملSlow dynamics in a turbulent von Kármán swirling flow.
An experimental study of a turbulent von Kármán flow in a cylinder is presented. The mean flow is stationary up to a Reynolds number Re=10(4) where a bifurcation takes place. The new regime breaks some symmetries of the problem and becomes time dependent because of equatorial vortices moving with a precession movement. In the exact counterrotating case, a bistable regime appears and spontaneous...
متن کاملSupercritical transition to turbulence in an inertially-driven von Karman closed flow
We study the transition from laminar flow to fully developed turbulence for an inertially-driven von Kármán flow between two counter-rotating large impellers fitted with curved blades over a wide range of Reynolds number (10 − 10). The transition is driven by the destabilisation of the azimuthal shear-layer, i.e., Kelvin–Helmholtz instability which exhibits travelling/drifting waves, modulated ...
